The minute December starts, you will find every porch decorated with outdoor Christmas lights. It’s the jolly season, and everyone wants to celebrate it in style. You, too, may be tempted to hang your own Christmas outdoor lights. However, before you start doing so, you need to consider these safety issues:
- Always choose Christmas outdoor lighting and extension cords that are safety-approved and specifically designed for outdoor use. Thus only use lights and electric equipment which are tested by reputable testing labs such as UL and ETL.
- If you already have Christmas lights in your attic, inspect them before hanging them outside. You should check for any blown bulbs or frayed wiring as both of these can set your house on fire.
- Before heading outside, make sure that your ladder is sturdy. Most accidents which happen during the holiday season is because home owners don’t check whether their ladders are of proper height or are strong enough to bear their weight.
- While installing your Christmas lights, make sure that you follow the instructions in the manual. Even if you had already done this before, remember that it has been a year since you last installed lights outside. So, go through the user’s manual one more time and make sure that you’re following it.
- Avoid placing your outdoor Christmas light on any sharp edges. These will cut through the wire and cause major problems.
- If you have small children in your house, make sure that the lights aren’t within their reach. The hot bulbs may burn their hands if they decide to touch them. In addition, keep the wires and electrical outlets covered and far away from their reach.
- Prepare for unexpected weather conditions such as rain or snow by keeping a large tarp just in case. The minute the weather worsens, all you will need to do is through the tarp over your roof, and protect your lights from getting wet.
- After Christmas is over, make sure that you take the lights down as soon as possible. Outdoor Christmas lights shouldn’t be left hanging as that will worsen their condition, and maybe even cause certain problems such as short circuits or fires.
- While removing the lights, make sure that you don’t pull the wires. This will destroy the sockets as well the bulbs.
By following these safety measures, you will be able to ensure the wellbeing of your family as well as your house. Plus, you will be able to save your Christmas lights for an extra year. So you’re really getting a good deal in the end.
